2020 Advanced Course in Public Library Management: Session Two Starts in Yunlin County
2020 Advanced Course in Public Library Management: Session Two Starts in Yunlin County

The second session of the 2020 Advanced Course in Public Library Management was held on July 8-9 and 15-1 in the Culture and Tourism Department’s discussion room, Yunlin County. On the first day, National Central Library Director-General Shu-hsien Tseng held an opening ceremony and spoke on “Public Library Services by Age and Group.” That afternoon, Dr. Hsieh Pao-nuan from National Taiwan University’s Library and Information Science Department spoke on “Quality Management and Service Programs.” Librarians and library staff from township and town libraries in Yunlin County signed up for the course.

National Central Library Director-General Shu-hsien Tseng encouraged attendees to have public libraries play an important role in communities for the intellectual development of preschool aged children. How to plan and provide suitable services based on the language and cognitive development of preschool aged children is a topic that public libraries should be exploring, so as to increase their interests in reading and early reading and writing abilities.

In 2016, National Central Library, under the guidance and assistance of the Ministry of Education, began actively holding basic and advanced courses in public library management in counties and cities around Taiwan. These courses are certified as non-standard education courses by the MOE. Currently, courses have been held for librarians in New Taipei City, Hsinchu, Taichung, Nantou, Changhua, Yunlin, Tainan, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Keelung, and the Kinmen Islands. It is hoped that these will decrease the need to travel long distances for those wishing to attend and actually improve the professional service and acumen of local librarians.

The Five Planned Sessions for 2020:

1.The Yilan Advanced Course was held on June 10-11 and 17-18. It was cohosted by the Yilan County Culture Bureau.
