Director-general Tseng Visits the National Library of the Czech Republic

NCL Director-general Tseng Shu-hsien visited the National Library of the Czech Republic (NLCR) on October 31, 2014, Czech local time. She had a friendly talk with NLCR Director-general Ing. Tomáš Böhm, during which the two sides discussed future cooperation affairs. She also presented a dual color wood-block printing replica of the earliest extant edition of The Diamond Sutra for the NLCR collection. The visit attested to the closeness of exchanges and the friendly interactions between the libraries of the two countries. It also planted seeds for the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the future.

The NLCR is located at the site of the Klementinum, which dates back to the 16th century and was the most important library in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. The library, the oldest in the Czech Republic, has a collection of more than six million volumes, including 5,000 hand-inscribed books from the Medieval period. Franz Kafka, the father of modern literature, frequented the Klementinum and studied German literature, art history and philosophy here.

Deputy director-general Adolf Knoll and Tomáš Foltýn, Chief of the Management Department at the NLCR, enthusiastically introduced the library's digitization work and achievements to Director-general Tseng. Dr. Miroslava Hejnova, director of Historical and Music Collections, introduced the Mozart Memorial established at the NLCR in 1837. The Mozart documents at the memorial are among the most popular collection resources at the NLCR. The memorial also often hosts concerts, further bringing the genius of Mozart to life.
