Director-general Tseng Visits the National library of the Netherlands

On the afternoon of October 27, 2014, NCL’s Director-general Tseng Shu-hsien visited the National library of the Netherlands (Dutch: Koninklijke Bibliotheek, KB) located in The Hague and founded in 1798. She also went to the library’s exhibition room in search of “treasure.” The persons responsible for the National library of the Netherlands’ research on digital preservation, Barbara Sierman and Trudie Stoutjesdijk, were very generous to the group from NCL—showing them all of the features and treasures of their digital preservation efforts.

KB has conducted a series of studies on the best way to preserved digital resources long term. It worked with eight other national libraries in Europe to develop the Deposit System for Electronic Publications. It also worked with IBM to create a database for digital publications, as well as develop a simulator-based Universal Virtual Computer (UVC). This UVC can simulate older hardware on a virtual platform, allowing the new platform to show and reprocess data in older formats.
