In order to provide patrons with a better reading environment, Director-general Shu-hsien Tseng visited the University of Washington’s libraries on October 2, 2014. She toured the Odegaard Undergraduate Library, Health Sciences Library, Foster Business Library and Gallagher Law Library to understand recent transformations in UW’s library space. The tour was conducted by Zhijia Shen, Director of UW’s East Asia Library. The main focus of the tour was the renovation work that was done in 2010 to create the Research Commons (RC), RC Media: scape, Presentation Place, writing/research center, and group study rooms—all of which are very impressive. The library’s RC has three different color zones (red, white, and green) to designate unique functions. The red-walled area contains Media: scape and small discussion rooms. The white-walled area houses the Presentation Place, complete with computers, projectors, large movable whiteboards, speakers, and wireless microphones. The green area has five spaces for different uses, including teaching and group discussion. After a tour of campus, Director-general Tseng and Director Shen, along with Director General Andy Chin from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle, members of the oversea Chinese community, Professor Yue Dong, and Director Ray Li of International Advancement shared a meal and discussed ideas on furthering cooperation between Taiwan, UW, and the Chinese community in Seattle. A group photo was taken after the meal to remember this special occasion.
