The National Central Library, the National Science Council of Humanities and Social Sciences Division, National Applied Research and Technology Policy Research and Information Center all collaborated to establish and put in place the “Taiwan Citation Index — Humanities and Social Sciences” (TCI-HSS). This database includes several categories:periodicals, doctoral dissertations, books, and periodicals’ data. The goal is to complete the collection since 2000 of humanities and scholarly publications from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao. Currently, two databases developed by the National Science Council of Humanities and Social Research Center: The “Taiwan Social Sciences Citation Index” (TSSCI) and “Taiwan Humanities Citation Index” (THCI) are used as main foundation. After these are categorized, it will be expanded and enhanced mainly with the NCL’s “National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertation in Taiwan、” “Online Public Access Catalog.”

The function and content of this database are different from other commercially used database. Through the power of the public sector to ensure academic autonomy to nearby public, this database accomplishes the goal of social responsibility for inquiry and usage of the academic world and the public in general.
