National Central Library is hosting “The 100th Year of the Republic, a Classical Time for Reading,” in conjunction with libraries and cultural education institutions across the island. The opening ceremony for this series of events was held this morning at NCL’s exhibition hall. As part of the ceremony, there was a musical performance on a zither, poetry recitation, a donation of books, appreciation awards, a display of the four favored pastimes of scholars: music, chess, calligraphy, painting, as well as of classical works. The entire hall was filled with the elegant sounds, sights, and aroma of the ancients. This, in addition to a packed display of rare items, was enjoyed by over 100 attendees showing their support for reading the classics. In attendance were such dignitaries as the Vice President Vincent Siew, Minister of Education Wu Tsai-shun, Advisor Hao Ming-yi, Head of the Department of Social Education Ke Jeng-feng, Trend Education Foundation Executive Director Chen Yi-chen, Director of Keelung City Cultural Affairs Bureau Chang Chien-Hsiang, President of National Open University Chang Chi-hao, and directors and presidents from all other cosponsors.
