Director-general Tseng Attends 2014 International Digital Library Conference and Signs Cooperative Agreement with National Library of Malaysia

The 2014 International Digital Library Conference (IDLC) was held on April 8-10 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was co-hosted by the National Library of Malaysia, the Librarians Association of Malaysia, Multimedia Development Cooperation, and Petroliam Nasional Berhad. The theme of the conference was Preserving and Sharing Digital Resources through Co-operation and Collaboration. Since NCL has vast experience in producing and archiving digital works, as well as in participating in many international cooperative endeavors, adding value and making better use of digital content, and setting an example in preserving and sharing resources, Director-general Tseng has been invited to attend many important international meetings to discuss NCL’s efforts in preserving cultural assets. This time Director-general Tseng was asked to be the keynote speaker, talking on “National Central Library’s Efforts to Archive, Manage, and Provide Services for Digital Resources in Taiwan.” She reported on the developmental history of NCL’s digital archives, methods of preserving digital content, innovations in digital services, the promotion of digitized ancient and rare works, and local and international plans to share resources. Attendees to the conference included scholars and experts from library, information, scholarly, and publishing circles. The directors and representatives from almost 20 national libraries (including the Philippines, Korea, Hong Kong, the U.S., Australia, Myanmar, New Zealand, and Thailand), and nearly 300 local attendees, exchanged ideas on the digitizing of library holdings in the digital age and cooperative efforts in digital services. To strengthen ties with the National Library of Malaysia, Director-general Tseng took advantage of the opportunity to present them with a replica of a set of rare books in NCL’s possession: Annotated Poetry of Su Dongpo. The donation ceremony was held during the evening welcome banquet on April 8. The books were received by the Director-general of the National Library of Malasia, Dato’ Raslin Bin Abu Bakar. Next, on April 9 the 300 plus attendees were witness to the signing of a cooperative agreement by Director-general Tseng and the National Library of Malaysia’s Director-general Dato’ Raslin Bin Abu Bakar, which will open doors for future long-term professional and scholarly cooperation between the two libraries. Signing this agreement with the National Library of Malaysia will improve both parties’ scientific, technological, cultural, and information exchange. Specifically, cooperation will be in the following forms: international exchange of publications, acquisition of special materials, sharing of catalog information, exchanges between personnel, and co-hosting events. NCL believes this will take cultural exchange between the two countries to a new level.
