National Central Library donates books to Kuala Lumpur Chinese Taipei School
National Central Library donates books to Kuala Lumpur Chinese Taipei School

To increase the library resources of overseas Taiwan schools, so that more Malaysian Chinese oversea children may be able to have more high-quality books published in Taiwan thereby enhancing understanding of Taiwanese culture, the National Central Library (NCL) of Republic of China(Taiwan) in collaboration with the teachers from the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Taipei School carefully selected appropriate books for children. Among them are picture books, story books and novels, literature books suited foryouth, arts and other books. A total of 145 titles, 151 volumes were selected. These will be donated to Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Taipei Chinese School by NCL Director General Shu-Hsien Tseng on July 14 and received by the school principal, Yih-Ching Chang.

Overseas Taiwan schools are established in accordance with Taiwan's educational objectives and current systems of schools at all levels. They are in convergence with domestic education. Not only do they provide overseas Chinese students formal education, they are also an important stronghold in promoting Traditional Chinese Language education and in bringing together overseas Chinese and Taiwanese businessmen. At present, there are five overseas Taiwan schools in three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. The Kuala Lumpur Chinese Taipei School in Malaysia was established in 1992 for students from kindergarten through high school who hold foreign (i.e. non-Malaysia) passports.

In the remark, Chancellor Chang Yi-ching addressed that Director General Tseng devotes to promote library service and cooperation from domestic to international community, and thanks for NCL’s book donation to all the teachers and students of the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Taipei School.

Director General Tseng on her part, pointed out that the NCL launches the Taiwan Resource Centre for Chinese Studies project abroad as an academic exchange platform for international sinologists. In addition, all the partner libraries are benefited from the books and e-resources given by the NCL. Director General Tseng said she believes NCL’s book donation to the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Taipei School will enhance the users’ knowledge and creativity and play a significant role in assisting teaching in the school.

Reading is the foundation of education; it is fundamental to all learning. Reading is like a train ride. Through books, one can see the different aspects of life broadening ones horizons. Some books can create unexpected influence upon children. For this reason, the NCL promotes reading with continuous efforts and determination in the hope that all children may have the opportunity to see more and more good books. Of particular concern are those children from places who have relatively limited local library resources. Last year a national charity sale, “Sharing Love through Books, was launched. One thousand books were purchased and offered to seven remote schools. This time, this “Charity” will be extended overseas to provide library resources to Taiwan schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It will be our little gesture of encouragement for the hard work exerted in running Taiwan schools overseas
