It’s Very Good to Have You in Taiwan –National Central Library Holds Award Ceremony for Publishers Depositing Their Publications

It is the first time since its established 80 years ago that National Central Library held on March at its lecture hall “Cultural Heritage, Leading Academia: National Central Library Holds Thanksgiving Tea Party” Attending by approximately 160 publishers and 60 college persons, representatives from publishers spoke gratefully to National Central Library for its application for ISBN for them and sent news on “National News Book Information Monthly” that gives reference for libraries to select good books and for the public to find good books to read. Representatives from colleges said students can now easily find materials for their writing good theses. It is helpful for them to raise levels of their academic standards. National Central Library Knowledge Service Division reported that in the 2011 academic year they studies trends of theses and found the five most favorite topics that received most concerned from the public were: marketing, satisfaction, education, sightseeing, and service quality. In the 2011 academic year most favorite study topics of Taiwan graduate students are: service quality, satisfaction, analytical method, desire to purchase, pressure from work. Even the ranking 11th such as smart phone is associated with current situation. National Central Library used its established “National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan” to analyze the citation of degree papers in the 2011 academic year in Taiwan and rank them. The most three frequently cited national universities were National Taiwan Normal University, National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University, and the private ones were Chinese Culture University, Tamkang University, and Fu Jan Catholic University. ISBN Center analyzed the publication and its trends in 2012 in Taiwan and found in its statistics that 5085 publishers have published 42305 new books in 2012. Compare new books published with population, it is found that every 550 people owned one new copy published in current year, which is next to that of England’s 421. People in Taiwan who own new books rank the 1st in Asia and stand ahead in the world Subject categories of new books published: language and literature have dominated with total 13035 volumes, 30.82%, next are arts, social science, and applied sciences with 14%, respectively. This statistics shows consistency with NCL’s recent announcement that the 2012 most interesting subjects to the public in Taiwan and the categories of new publication, the only difference is in ranking. The above statistics, hot topics, and trends were obtained from degree papers deposited from college with their full texts, as well as ISBN application that were submitted one by one and the CIP information. Through National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan, National New Books Information Network, National New Books Information Monthly, and customer-designed interest reading subject, NCL has sent to readers by way of “Pre-publication Daily” service system, the newest publication information gained the day before. National Central Library is grateful to colleges that provided the public with intellectual crystals with the purpose of inheriting culture and leading academia.
