The Association for Asian Studies (AAS), the world’s largest Asian Studies academic community, held its 2024 annual conference in Seattle from March 14th to 17th. National Central Library continues to attend AAS annual conferences and participate in the event’s book exhibit in order to bring awareness among the AAS community of Asian Studies scholars to Taiwan’s academic achievements in the humanities and to promote familiarity with Taiwan Studies research and various fellowships offered to conduct relevant research in Taiwan. On the afternoon of March 14th local time, NCL, Academia Sinica Press, and National Taiwan University Press held a donation ceremony, presenting books to Ms. Xiaotong Wang, representing the University of Oregon Library.
Director-General Han-ching Wang, who led the NCL delegation attending the conference, expressed that NCL has long worked with the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange to curate and participate in academic organization events abroad. In particular, they have worked to actively promote academic achievements in Taiwan Studies research at AAS and to share Taiwan’s high-quality channels for accessing research materials. These efforts have made significant strides in promoting the international visibility of Taiwan Studies research. Furthermore, in following established precedent, all books displayed at the exhibit are donated to a local university library or academic organization at the conclusion of the event, in the hopes of not only enriching university library collections, but also facilitating further exploration of Chinese Studies and Taiwan research topics by local scholars and promoting interest in conducting research in Taiwan. Therefore, as a part of this year’s conference, NCL not only donated books to the University of Washington’s Tateuchi East Asia Library on March 12th, in addition, NCL and other participating Taiwanese academic institutions made a donation to the University of Oregon Library on the afternoon of March 14th. NCL Director-General Han-ching Wang, Director Hsi-yuan Chen of the Academia Sinica Press, and Senior Specialist Lisa Chi of the National Taiwan University Press represented their respective institutions in presenting the donation to the University of Oregon Library.
